What Does the Board Do?
Let's break it down.
Money
The Board decides how the budget is spent across all of GREEN's schools, and how it is allocated each year.
My number one focus is to make sure as much of that budget as possible is spent on the things that impact students (like resources, equity, and appropriate staffing) and teachers (no teacher should have to fundraise for classroom basics, and they should be paid a living wage).
Policies
Approving the rules, voting on disciplinary matters, making sure we're operating legally, and all that good stuff.
We can't change state and federal laws, but we have some autonomy about how we operate under them to ensure our schools are fairly run and create inclusive and safe environments for all students and staff.
Vision
Making GREEN the best it can be so we can grow (i.e. recruiting new folks to enter the lotteries), evolve (like opening new schools, for example), and give the kids the best possible experience.
It's not always clear that GREEN is a FREE public education, and we want to grow, particularly in Spartanburg, to ensure students can continue to attend through high school one day. That starts with recruitment and community outreach, and ensuring the vision for GREEN is carried through on all campuses.
